UPCOMING EVENTS 2010

WINTER LEAGUE UPDATE : FEBRUARY 2010
The Winter League competition has now reached its "elimination" stage.
Played to an individual Stableford format, the eventual winner will be the player with the highest aggregate points score
over the best 5 rounds of a possible 10. (This will now be 5 out of 9, as one round had to be cancelled due to the snow).
Six rounds have been completed, so each player now starts to discount his worst scores.
It looks as though the league leader, Dave Kewley, will take some catching, having a total of 183 points,
i.e 10 points ahead of his nearest rival - Peter Clements, with 173.
In third place is Richard Steel with 168, followed by Mike Abraham with 165 and Trevor Nottingham with 164.

2009 : END OF SEASON ROUND-UP

28th September Seniors' Foursome competition
Only in its 2nd year, this is a medal competition, played off the white tees with 1/2 of combined handicap.
It was won by Peter Gilbert & Eric Pike with a nett score of 71.
Second were Mike Abraham & Richard Steel and 3rd - Geoff Roberts & Peter Ratledge with 73.

23rd September Jubilee Challenge Trophy

This was a 4 ball better ball medal, played from the white tees off 3/4 handicap.
It was won by Jim Burton & Mike Gage with a nett 69.
Second were Peter Gilbert & Graham Pulfer with a 71.

7th September Seniors' Away Day to Belmont, Herefordshire.
There was a good turn-out for this individual Stableford competition on a course that was new to most competitors.
The winner with 35 points was Dave Kewley.
2nd - Peter Gilbert with 30, 3rd - Phil White 29, 4th Robin Flack 29, 5th Tony Fawcett 28, 6th Jeff Fletcher 28.

Nearset the pin on three of the par 3s were Tony Fawcett, Ken Crane and Eric Pike.

INTER CLUB MATCHES
We finished the season in disappointing style, losing our last five matches.
These were to: Ombersley (away), Kidderminster (away), Bransford (away), Puckrup (home) and Worcester Golf & Country Club (away).
What should have been the final match, at home to Redditch, was cancelled.

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP : FINAL ROUND : 26TH AUGUST
It's finally over! Although the forecasters promised horrendous weather, it turned out very reasonable and the 2009 competition was completed. There were quite a few drop-outs from the first round and the committee will be looking at enforcing the committment to play both rounds in future years.
Diffin Trophy (best gross score over 36 holes)
Winner Alan Askew 87 + 80 = 167
Runner-up Jerry Cain 179
Third Martin Bird 181
Wilson Jug (best nett score over 36 holes)
Winner David Taylor 78 + 67 = 145
Runner-up Martin Bird 71 + 78 = 149
Third Jerry Cain 70 +79 = 149
(Martin was runner-up due to a better 2nd round score).
David Taylor's handicap was accordingly reduced from 20 to 19.

STABLEFORD : 24TH AUGUST
On Monday 24th August the Seniors held a Stableford competition, which comprised 15 competitors.
It was won by Alan Ellis, with 40 points, second was Hugh Homer (35), with a better back nine than Vic Barnes (35).

MATCH v PUCKRUP : 20TH AUGUST
We came off second best today at Puckrup Hall, just losing out by 3 1/2 games to 2 1/2.

Peter Gilbert & John Bomford, Peter Edmunds & Jerry Cain and Mike Abraham & Brian Chapman

FLAG COMPETITION : 17TH AUGUST
Today, 17th August, saw the Seniors play their first ever "Flag" competition, which provded an interesting change from the usual format.
The idea came from David Taylor, who donated a very attractive trophy.
The object of the competition is to see who can progress the furthest on the course, before using up all of his shot allowance.
This is determined by adding a player's handicap to the par for the course (i.e. 72).
Once his last shot has been played, he plants a "flag" where his ball comes to rest.
Some competitiors still had shots in hand after 18 holes, so the match was decided on the 19th, with the following result:
The winner - Mike Abraham, 2nd - David Taylor and 3rd - Phil White

AUTUMN CUP : 14TH AUGUST
A medal (Qualifying competition), it was played on 14th August and comprised 23 Seniors.
The winner with a nett 72, off a handicap of 20, was David Taylor.
Second with 73, off 18, was Graham Pulfer and 3rd - Dave Kewley - 74, off 17.
It was welcome back to Graham, who has not played competitive golf for some time ,
but here he was, in his brand new motorised buggy, playing as well as ever. Well done Graham.
Alan Askew had the lowest gross score, of 83.

MATCH v TEWKESBURY  (AWAY) : 10TH AUGUST
The Seniors visited Tewkesbury Park and came away with an honourable draw - 3 games apiece.
Evesham's winning pairs were MIke Whiteford & John Curtis, Peter Belcher & David Kewley and Peter Gilbert & Jeff Fletcher.
Less successful were: Peter Edmunds & Richard Cross, Ray Smart & Brian Chapman and David Scott & Peter Ratledge.
The Seniors' Section are pleased to recruit Dubai Dai (aka Grahham Byng), to their ranks, his having recently attained the qualifying age.
We look forward to seeing him playing with us on a regular basis.

MATCH v LILLEYBROOK (HOME) : 27TH JULY
A win by 5.5 to 1.5. The old boys are becoming consistent under the lashing from Skipper Mike, who took a leaf from his own book and halved his match, abley assisted by Richard Steel. Last out, David Taylor & Alan Ellis just lost - 1 down, due to a long putt on the 18th, but all the others won. They were:
Phil White & Peter Edmunds (3 & 2), Ray Smart & Tony Rose (2 & 1), John Bomford & Mike Abraham (4 & 3),
Peter Belcher & Peter Gilbert (3 & 2), and Brian Chapman & Hugh Homer (1 up).
Brian and Hugh staged a dramatic counter-attack, having been 5 down with 9 holes to play!

SENIORS OPEN : 22ND JULY
The course having been closed the previous day, owing to torrential rain, fingers were crossed for this event to take place. It did, and the last three came in just five minutes before the rain flooded the course again, although strong winds had conspired to provide a stiff challenge.
This year it was a Stableford competition (previously a medal) and it attracted nearly 100 competitors from Worcestershire and surrounding counties.
The winner was George Parker, from the home club, playing in his first Evesham Seniors' competition, who scored 39 points.

MATCH v BAUGHTON PARK (HOME) : 1ST JULY
The Seniors had a very good result yestarday, when they entertained the Worcester Golf and Country Club.
Nobody fainted as far as I know, in spite of a temerature reaching 32 degrees and excessive humidity.
In a victory by 5 1/2 matches to 1 1/2, the winning pairs were:
Mike Whiteford & Richard Saville, John Bomford & Peter Edmunds, Hugh Homer & Peter Belcher, Ken Piddington & Mike Abraham and Ray Smart & David Taylor.
Vic Barnes & Alan Ellis got a half and the only losing pair were Rod Spencer & David Scott.

Some indifferent scoring saw the CSS rise to 74, but the winner still managed to score 40 points.
This was Alan Ellis, with Geoff Roberts in second place with 34 and Ray Smart third with 31.
Two more similar events are scheduled for July and August and these will be qualifiers

MATCH v KIDDERMINSTER (HOME) : 17TH JUNE
Another drawn match - 3 1/2 to 3 1/2.
On this occasion the winners were Mike Whiteford & David Taylor, Robin Flack & Geoff Roberts and Tony Rose & Mike Abraham.
Losers: Hugh Homer & Ray Smart, Alan Ellis & Ken Piddington and Rod Spencer & Mike Morris.
Peter Belcher & John Bomford halved their match.

MATCH v LILLEYBROKE (AWAY) : 10TH JUNE
A creditable drawn match on a difficult course. Score 3 1/2 to 3 1/2.
Evesham's winning pairs were: Graham Hughes & Mike Abraham, Alan Askew & Jerry Cain and David Kewley & Alan Groves.
Tony Rose & Eric Pike went down, as did Keith Morris & Rod Spencer and Peter Callaghan & John Bomford.
Peter Gilbert & Peter Edmunds secured a half, having at one stage been 5 down!

COSTA CRAYCOMBE : MONDAY 8TH JUNE
A good turnout on a nice morning with the course in excellent shape dispite the heavy rain over the previous weekend. Scoring was moderate at best with 16 scores over 80 net, but new senior Keith Morris triumphed by a street with 71 net, runner-up with 75 Mike Abraham, who had a slightly better back 9 than Phil White - also on 75.

SENIOR CAPTAIN'S DAY : 27TH MAY
What at first looked like a wet morning turned out to be quite pleasant, with only the wind to contend with and the results were:
1st Mike Whiteford, David Taylor and Geoff Roberts, with 83 points:
2nd Peter Clements, Mike Abraham and Alan Askew - 80:
3rd Brian Chapman, Derek Stroud and Ken Piddington - 78.
The format was a Stableford, played in teams of 3 off full handicap, with the best 2 scores to count on each hole, but all 3 on the par 3s.
Michael was kind enough to treat all 33 competitors to lunch and to provide the prizes. An enjoyable morning was had by all.

STABLEFORD : 18TH MAY
(A new idea introduced by vice-captain Tony Rose)
The winner was Roger Page with 35 points, 2nd: Eric Pike - 32 and 3rd: Geoff Roberts - 31.
Scores in general were not very good - no doubt due in part to the high winds and later rain.
The next Stableford will be on Monday 15th June, when Roger will be cut 2 shots for the day, and Eric - 1 shot.
It will be played with only 4 clubs and a putter.

SENIORS & LADIES AWAY DAY : OMBERSLEY : 15TH MAY
Twenty seniors and 20 ladies competed in this annual event. The format was a 4 ball better ball Stableford,
played off their full handicaps, with each pair comprising a gentleman and a lady.
Starting at 9.30am in the mist, the weather turned out to be surprisingly good until the last groups approached the 14th hole, when the heavens opened.
As the greens became waterlogged, the match was therefore abandoned and the results determined over the first 13 holes.
The winning pair was Alan Ellis & Margaret Whiteford with 35 points, on a count back from Richard Cross & Pam Hutcheon (35).
3rd: Graham Pulfer & Jane Bagley - 34 (good to see Graham playing again)
4th: Ken Hunt & Jackie Edmunds
5th: Peter Belcher & Sue Taylor
6th: Mike Whiteford & Helen Cross.
Of particular note was the achievement of Alan Ellis, playing off his handicap of 22.
He had a birdie on one of the par 3 holes, got 2 shots, so finished with a nett zero - 5 points!

WYCHAVON CUP : WED 13TH MAY
The second Seniors' competition of the season was held in wet and miserable conditions. The rain drizzled for almost the entire morning and three of the sixteen pairs involved had had enough before the end and put in a "no return".
The "Wychavon Cup" is a Better Ball Medal competition, played off the white tees, with each player allowed 3/4 of his handicap.
In spite of the weather, the winning pair managed a creditable score of 74. They were Phil White and Alan Ellis, who won on the back 9 from David Taylor and David Scott.
Third, although they didn't actually win a prize, were Mike Abraham and Ken Piddington, with 75

MATCH v THE VALE ( AWAY) : 7TH MAY
A visit to The Vale, resulted in a 1-1/2 to 5-1/2 defeat with our only winners Mike Abraham and Ray Smart who won 3 and 2. Captain Mike Whiteford and Eric Pike managed a half.
On a sunny but windy day, we found the course was in great condition, so we had no excuses.

MATCH v BRANSFORD (HOME) : 29TH APRIL
On Wednesday 29th April we entertained Bransford Seniors and managed to win - by 4 games to 3.
Our winning pairs were:
Captain Mike Whiteford & Jerry Cain, Alan Groves & Peter Gilbert, MIke Abraham & Alan Ellis and Eric Pike & Ray Smart.

Runners-up were Tony Rose and Ken Brown - plus 2.
Although there were only 2 prizes, the next best scores were by Peter Gilbert and Alan Ellis (plus1)
and Peter Belcher and Alan Bees (even), beating Mike Morris and Rod Spencer on the back 6 holes.

MATCH v THE VALE (HOME) : 15TH APRIL
We came off second best yesterday, when The Vale visited Evesham, losing by 4 matches to 3.
Although we started in wet and gloomy conditions, the weather soon improved and developed into a pleasant morning.
Evesham' winning pairs were: Captain Mike Whiteford & Phil White, VIce-Captain Tony Rose & Jerry Cain,
and Alan Ellis & Jim Burton.
Mike Morris & Peter Gilbert, David Taylor & Peter Edmunds, Alan Groves & Ray Smart and Peter Belcher & Mike Abraham all lost.
For Secretary Jerry, who recently joined the elite band of Seniors, it was his first match, as it was for Alan Groves, although he joined us some years ago.

MATCH v THE WORCESTERSHIRE (HOME) : 8TH APRIL
We're into another season of Seniors' matches, but unfortunately Evesham went down by 2 1/2 games to 4 1/2.
There were some close results and one or two, not so close.
Evesham's winners were David Taylor & Michael Morris and Peter Edmunds & Peter Ratledge.
The losing pairs were Mike Whiteford & Peter Belcher, Phile White & Eric Pike, Peter Gilbert & Roger Page
and Brian Chapman & Ray Smart. Tony Rose & Mike Abraham secured a half.
