66 players hailing from all sections of Evesham Golf Club joined together to remember Pat Saville and compete for the magnificent glass trophy purchased in her name.

Format was a 3 ball Texas scramble over 12 holes with teams drawn / fiddled to create a rich mix of varying handicaps, men, ladies, and seniors. The game of golf, like many things in modern life, is moving rapidly towards gender-neutral status. This competition is our first serious attempt to bring all sections of the club together as one. If the clubhouse buzz on Sunday afternoon is a fair unit of measure, then I think we can report a roaring success with many new friendships forged and old acquaintances renewed.

The weather was kind to us with mild, dry, and rather still conditions leading to most teams reporting their game as having been at least good in parts! Scoring was tight at the top, and it was great to note that all of the top 6 teams included a lady player. Perfect.

Shani did us proud with an excellent buffet, and a good time was had by all.

Birdie twos were hard to come by, but three teams each shared a dozen golf balls between them for twos on the 6th hole:

Ruth Masters / Neil Croft / Ian Baird ( Neil’s tee shot )

Fraser Williamson / Kevin Wyld / Richard Saville ( Great tee shot Hon.Sec.)

Dave Kewley / Dave Mullet / Yvonne Kreise ( Mr Kewley’s tee shot )

Winners with a clear best score of net 41 were Eunice and her young men, James Atwood and Ian Unwin.

Well played, noting the risk / reward strategy of saving Eunice’s final scoring drive for the difficult 12th hole!

Jim made a very nice thank you speech, reflecting on how much we miss Pat. We are, of course, immensely grateful to Richard for endorsing this landmark annual competition in Pat’s name.

In 2024, the Pat Saville Unity Competition will be held on Sunday 29th September.

Please make a note in your new diaries!
